This grave marker (a flower vase inside an inscribed pedestal) is in roughly the right place: it is in the St Mary Magdalen section, and at the far end of the cemetery with the later burials. It appears, however, to have been moved from its original position
Rose May Goodall was born in St Barnabas parish, Oxford in 1892. At the time of the 1891 census she was living at 61 Great Clarendon Street with her father Francis Goodall (40), who was a tailor, her mother Rose (37), and her four sisters Gertrude (14), Dorothy (6), Elsie (4), and Lily (10). By 1911 when she was aged 19 she was a housemaid at St Ebbe's Rectory.
William Theodore Facer was born in Cottree, India on 5 October 1886. He served as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy, and he married his fist wife Charlotte Annie Fletcher in Portsmouth in 1908. At the time of the 1911 census when he was aged 28 he was living with Charlotte (29) at 4 Turk Street, Portsmouth.
It is unclear whether he married Rose May Goodall as his second wife (as his first wife does not appear to have died until 1959), but Rose called herself Mrs Facer.
At the time of the 1921 census William Facer (34), described as a wagon repairer for the Wagon Repair Co. Ltd of 7 Rewley Road, was living at 59 Juxon Street in Jericho with Rose Facer (29), described as his wife, and their six-month-old son Edwin (born in Oxford on 15 December 1920). Their daughter Christine M. Facer was born on 28 December 1926.
Rose died at that address in 1936:
† Mrs Rose May Facer, née Goodall died at 59 Juxon Street at the age of 43 on 3 April 1936 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 6 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).
The fact that Rose Facer’s burial was recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church indicates that she was buried in their section of the cemetery. Normally someone living in St Barnabas’s parish would have been buried in the St Paul’s section, but it is possible that their section was full at this late date and spaces were made available regardless of parish.
Her effects came to £264 17s. 9d., and her husband William Theodore Facer, who was then working as a car washer, was her executor.
The 1939 Register shows William Theodore Facer, described as an assistant washer at a garage, living at 39 Juxon Street with his son Edwin, who was a laboratory assistant, and his daugter Christine, who was at school, plus their houskeeper. Also living with them, possibly as a lodger, was Evelyn G. Batt (born 1900), and in 1947 Evelyn became his wife.
William Facer died in Oxford at the age of 66 in February 1953 and was buried in Wolvercote Cemetery .
